July 28, 2004 - Ortlieb's Brewery Shuttered, Unlikely To Reopen UPDATED
UPDATE:  Sources today report that a prospective buyer is already in the process of buying the Sunnybrook Ballroom and will close the brewery and sell off the equipment.

The original news item:

Ortlieb's Brewery & Grille in Pottstown is closed following the death of founder Henry Ortlieb and is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday, September 1, brewmaster Bill Moore confirmed today.

Ortlieb died in a boating accident in Costa Rica on July 4.

"Henry's widow, Susan, really had very little to do with this place," Moore said, "and after she came in and looked at things, she said her head was just reeling and she needed time to think about what happens next. Not only is she still grieving, she's also in in the middle of moving the family to Florida, where she and Henry were planning to live. He was going to fly back from Costa Rica to Miami to sign the final papers. She's down there now trying to get things settled. The last word we got is that we would reopen September 1."

Sources close to the situation say that tax and financial problems had, at least temporarily, already shut down the brewery even before Ortlieb's unexpected demise, however, and several industry insiders have expressed their doubts that the doors will ever open again under current ownership.
