- January 28, 2005 - New Beer Festival Scheduled at WorldCafe Live February 12
- WorldCafe Live, the unique live music venue at 3025 Walnut Street in Philadelphia which is a joint venture between PBS radio statuion WXPN and Real Entertainment Group, will hold its first annual B.E.A.T.S. Blues & Brews Exposition on Saturday, February 12, featuring the beers and performances of an expected 20 brewers and breweries.
"B.E.A.T.S." stands for Brewing Exposition and Talent Show and each brewery has been invited to perform a live musical stint on the stage. So far, six breweries have signed on to perform: Pain Relievaz, the Dogfish Head rap team of Sam Calagione and Bryan Selders; Eli Charleston, a ragtime guitarist who is a truck driver for Troegs Brewing; Frank Thewes, a Princeton-base singer/songwriter from Triumph Brewing; Mike Falcone & John Dunn, a team from River Horse Brewing, and unspecified acts from Yards Brewing and General Lafayette.
Regional favorites Kristen Brandt, Stephanie Griggs and James Fortier are among other perfomers scheduled.
Other participating breweries already confirmed are Appalachian, Dock Street, Flying Fish, Heavyweight, Lancaster, Legacy, Sly Fox, Victory and Weyerbacher. More are expected to be added soon, both to pour their brews and to go on stage, according to special events coordinator Suzanne Woods, who conceived the event.
"I worked for Boston Brewing Company for a year and a half and attended many beer events," Woods explained. "I'm also a homebrewer and beer is my passion. And brewing seems to attract a lot of people who also play music, so the combination seemed perfect."
There will be a special VIP tasting which begins at 1 pm and the doors will open to other ticketholders at 2 pm. The event, which will end at 6 pm, is expected to draw 400 people, Woods said, each of whom will receive a 6oz logo-ed tasting glass and enjoy a free buffet, including a special chocolate one in honor of Valentine's Day.
Woods noted that the WorldCafe Live beer list has recently been upgraded as well, with Yards IPA and Sly Fox French Creek Helles added to the draft offerings and Abita Purple Haze, Anchor Liberty Ale, Flying Fish Abbey Double, Chimay Red, Paulaner HefeWeizen, Rogue Mocha Porter, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Troegs Nut Brown Ale and Victory HopDevil available in bottles.
Ticket prices (part of the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross for Tsunami relief programs) and more details can be found at the Beer Yard event listing and even more information is available at the World Cafe Live listing.
