May 05, 2005 - The Lion Celebrates 100-Year Brewing Tradition in 2005
The Lion Brewery of Wilkes-Barre will celebrate 100 years of brewing tradition in 2005 with a series of promotions, events and the launch of a Centennial Beer under the Stegmaier brand to commemorate the milestone. Promotions will all feature the new 100th Anniversary logo.

Events will allow consumers the opportunity to taste the range of brands currently made by the Lion, including; Stegmaier 1857, Porter and Gold Medal, Pocono Lager & Ales, Lionshead Deluxe Pilsner, Light and Malt Liquor, and Lion's Malternatives, according to Chuck Lawson, President & CEO.

"Our master brewer, Brendan Greenwood is developing a very special celebratory beer that will be available starting in September, in both draft and 12oz bottles," said Lawson.

The Lion is the only remaining regional brewery in northeast Pennsylvania, It all started in 1905, when The Luzerne County Brewing Company was built in Wilkes-Barre, PA. For almost 25 years, the brewery operated under that name and was able to continue its success through Prohibition by producing non-alcoholic products such as root beer.

In the early 1930's, the brewery was purchased by new owners and was renamed The Lion Brewery. The continued success of the brewery allowed them to not only produce their own brands, but also to acquire the highly successful Stegmaier brands and continue the time honored brewing traditions of their Wilkes-Barre neighbor.

Lawson and Patrick Belardi purchased the brewery in 1999, the same year that Liebotschaner Cream Ale and Brewery Hill Pocono Pilsner won Gold Medals at The Great American Beer Festival. The following year, the Lion was named "Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year" and brewer Leo Orlandini was chased "Brewmaster of the Year" at the GABF.

Greenwood joined the Lion in January of this year, moving from Philadelphia's Nodding Head Brewery & Restaurant, where he won five GABF medals.
