June 30, 2005 - With Decadence on the Way, Weyerbacher Looks Back
During a press gathering and tasting at Standard Tap in Philadelphia last night to officially announce the July release of Weyerbacher Brewing Company's 10th Anniversary Beer, Decadence, brewery founder Dan Weirback announced that the beer would be a one-off and would not appear again from Weyerbacher. "We may do another batch or two now, depending on our needs, but we won't ever brew Decadence again after that," he stressed.

Decadence, a strong (13% abv) amber ale, will begin arriving on distributor shelves the first two weeks of July. Primarily a bottle product, it will be sold in Pennsylvania in 12/24 cases and in New Jersey, New York and other venues in 22oz bottles. there will be limited draft available; the draft debut will be a spontaneous 7 PM pouring at Standard Tap, Drafting Room Exton, Spinnerstown Hotel and Which Brew in Easton, Weyerbacher's home town. It has also been added to the beers which will be served at the Monk's Cafe "Tom's Favorite Local Beers" dinner on July 12.

A select few major PA outlets, such as the Beer Yard, will carry the 22oz bottles and sixtels in addition to the cases, Weirback acknowledged.

Weyerbacher's three successful bourbon barrel-aged beers, released in recent months, will become part of their standard portfolio, according to Weirback; Heresy, the barrel-aged old Heathen Imperial Stout which was the most successful of the three, will be a year-round product; Insanity (barrel-aged Blithering Idiot barleywine) and Prophecy (barrel-aged Merry Monk's Tripel) will be seasonal releases. Two or three new beers are already in the planning stage as the brewery begins its second decade. "Look for an Imperial Pumpkin Ale this fall, around 8% abv," Weirback advised.

Reviewing Weyerbacher's history, Weirback said that the brewery, which opened on 6th Street in Easton in 1995 and added a very popular small brewpub there in 1998 before moving to a purely production site on Line Street in January 2002, and is on track to surpass $1 million in sales this year. "We are 28% percent ahead of last year for the first six months and in the fourth consecutive year of double-digit growth. Estimated barrelage for 2005 is 3600.

Weyerbacher upgraded its brewhouse from a 10-bbl system to a 25-bbl system in December 24, purchasing the former brewhouse of Victory Brewing in Downingtown, and that upgrade "dramatically improved quality and efficiency," Weirback noted. Looking back over the highlights of the past decade, he expressed particular pride in the fact that Weyerbacher was "the first brewery outside the BeNeLux countries to brew and production bottle a Belgian-style Quadruple (2000)."
