- June 30, 2005 - Former O'Flaherty's Pub Manager Surfaces in Levittown
- "Big Jim" Young, the general manager who turned O'Flaherty's Pub in Bristol into a local destination for good beer fans with a solid linup of local micros on tap and an extensive bottle list of craft beers from around the world before his achievement was wiped out by new ownership who believed that what the area needs is another sports bar, will be working at the Newportville Inn in Levittown come July.
During a press event for the release of Weyerbacher Brewing's 10th Anniversary Ale at Standard Tap last night (see accompanying story), Young told the Beer Yard that he will take up the fight again at the long-running German-themed bar and restaurant at 4120 Lower Road on Sunday, July 10.
"Newportville Inn is a family-oriented, more traditional place than O'Flaherty's was," Young said. "The menu is primarily German and German food and beer are already a staple. They have 18 taps and while the owner isn't a serious beer guy...not yet, anyway...he's willing to give me chance. I'll convert some of the taps to apporpriate beers from Victory, Sly Fox, Yards and others because I believe very strongly in supporting our local breweries, and I'll also see about upgrading the selection of imported German lagers, pilsners and bocks." He added that the inn has an extensive bottle offering and that he'd be working to upgrade that as well.
Asked how his approach would translate to a traditional German bar, Young laughed. "Some of the best beers in the world come from Germany, so I don't think there'll be a problem in that regard. Hey, I managed to sell craft beers and micros in Bristol, so you know I can handle a challenge."
